COVID-19

Alabama Oncology is continuously monitoring and responding to the novel coronavirus outbreak. Precautions and screening processes have been implemented to protect the health and safety our all patients, their families, and our staff.

We are following the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) recommendations for evaluation and limiting the spread of the virus. We will continue to monitor and respond to this evolving situation.

STRICT CLINIC ACCESS

A strict access policy is in effect for all Alabama Oncology outpatient facilities to protect the health of our patients and staff during the COVID-19 outbreak.

  • If you are sick or have symptoms of upper respiratory illness: Fever, Cough, Shortness of Breath, or Sore throat, please call us before coming to the clinic.
  • NO visitors will be allowed to accompany patients into the facility unless the patient meets the strict exception criteria.
  • If the exception criteria are met, NO visitors are allowed in the treatment area. There are NO exceptions to this guideline.
  • We are actively enforcing SOCIAL DISTANCING in all Alabama Oncology clinics.

PRIORITY SCHEDULING OF MEDICALLY NECESSARY APPOINTMENTS AND PROCEDURES

In an effort to protect our patients and staff and to prioritize the needs of those who may require immediate or time-sensitive care, we will be rescheduling some appointments over the coming weeks.

Schedule adjustments may also be made to maintain smaller numbers of patients in the clinic and treatment area to maintain Social Distancing in the clinic. We ask for your patience and cooperation as we work to implement these measures. We will contact you directly if your visit is postponed or rescheduled until a later date or time.

Frequently Asked Patient Questions

What is Alabama Oncology doing to protect patients and visitors from COVID-19?
Alabama Oncology places the highest priority on protecting patients, family, and employees from exposure to COVID-19. We are screening ALL patients via phone and at the entrance to each clinic. In addition to screening patients, we are screening each staff member before entering the premises each day. We have initiated a “NO VISITORS” protocol as well as enforcing SOCIAL DISTANCING by maintaining a 6-feet distance between others while in the clinic.

We are following the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) recommendations for evaluation and limiting the spread of the virus. We will continue to monitor and respond to this evolving situation.

What should I do if I have symptoms?

If you are sick or have symptoms of upper respiratory illness: Fever, Cough, Shortness of Breath, or Sore Throat, please call us before coming into the clinic. The healthcare team will provide you with additional instructions.

Should I cancel or reschedule my chemotherapy treatment?

At this time, we are taking every precaution to protect our patients. If you have no symptoms, there are currently no recommendations to stop chemotherapy for cancer patients amid the Coronavirus Pandemic. However, we must acknowledge that cancer patients could be at increased risk of complications if they become infected with the virus. If you have concerns regarding the risks, speak to your oncologist to make an informed decision regarding any treatment changes.

Is Alabama Oncology canceling appointments?

For the safety of our patients and staff, we are rescheduling some appointments in order to prioritize the needs of those who may require immediate or time-sensitive care and limit exposure to COVID-19. These decisions are being made after careful review of medical care needs and are most applicable to 6-month or 1-year follow-up patients who are not currently on treatment for cancer. Your appointment will only be rescheduled if your healthcare team determines that it is safe. We will contact you directly if your visit is postponed until a later date. If you have questions or concerns, please call our office.

Why can’t my family come with me to my appointment?

In an effort to protect our patients, their family, and our staff, we have activated a strict access policy during the COVID-19 outbreak. No visitors or family members are allowed to accompany a patient unless they meet strict exception criteria. If the family member is allowed, they must participate and meet the same screening parameters as the patient in order to enter the clinic. This includes a questionnaire and temperature screening. The patient may use a cell phone that is placed on speaker during the visit to allow the family to participate in the visit.
